Sustainable livelihoods for people living with HIV/AIDS

Male goats being given antibiotics before the distribution
On Thursday 5th July 2012 the Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (SLP) of DPO distributed goats to people living with HIV/AIDS. The project is being run in partnership with CAFOD, Caritas and the STAR Group for people living with HIV/AIDS. Members of STAR Group were given a male and female goat after receiving training on how to get the most from their new livestock. The project was designed to provide members with nutrition and an opportunity to breed more goats for commercial sale and income generation. The training component of the project is critical to ensuring that those receiving the goats have sufficient knowledge and understanding to manage their new livelihoods with long-term benefits in mind. The members were trained on the nutritional value of their goats and how to care or them properly. Now equip with the resources, knowledge and skills for tending and rearing goats, the members can begin building a sustainable livelihood and become self-sufficient. SLP are monitoring the member's progress and providing them with support and advice when needed. Two more distributions will take place in the week beginning 9th July 2012 to provide the same opportunity to people living with HIV/AIDS in other areas of Western Equatoria State.
